We made it all the way across Iowa with 12,000 of our closest friends. Here we are posing in front of the Mississippi River in Guttenberg, Iowa. It looks like we are smiling, but those are actually the tired winces of aching muscles and sore butts. All it took was 7 days, 418 miles, and a couple of pieces of rhubarb pie. Still, we had a great ride, and it was a good training ground for us and our bikes.
Bert had to make an unscheduled stop in Mason City. A dental semi-emergency interrupted his enjoyment of the 70 mile ride that day, so we found Alpha Orthodontics and they were kind enough to fit me in and fix me up.
For those of you who don't know about RAGBRAI, it stands for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The Register is the paper for Des Moines, and this event is the largest and oldest ride of its kind in the world. Each year they set a different route across the whole state starting on the western edge of Iowa and ending at the Mississippi River on the eastern border. 2014 is the 42nd RAGBRAI, and thousands of riders started from Rock Valley, Iowa to make the 7 day journey, stopping in small towns along the way and camping out each night. It is a spectacular event filled with friendly folks, challenging bike routes, and lots of Midwestern food and hospitable Iowans.

In early July we attended the annual conference of the American Art Therapy Association, which was held in San Antonio this year. Holly presented on her work in India and gave a workshop on using simple materials and creating art on the ground. We also talked with other art therapists about our ride and received lots of ideas and positive support. Next year the conference will be held in Minneapolis, which is where we headed after leaving Texas. After a fun day with our friends Dan and Marlo, we left for Iowa to prepare for RAGBRAI. We returned last week from a year long stay in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It has been a bit of a culture shock, but we are already preparing for our next adventure! Next week Holly will be presenting at the American Art Therapy Association conference in San Antonio, Texas. Then we will be on our way to Iowa!
